Our Karelian Bear Dog

Meet Sugarbear, our puppy.  Karelian Bear Dogs are in a special class of dogs, bred to hunt large game such as moose and bears.  Specially trained Karelian Bear Dogs are used in to teach bears to recognize and avoid human territory.

Karelian bear dogs are medium-sized, sturdily-built, Spitz-type dog, with a triangle-shaped head, prick ears, and a harsh, straight, black or black and white coat of medium length.  To learn more about these special animals, visit BearDogs.org.

Bear hunters have bred Karelian bear dogs for centuries in eastern Finland and western Russia. Karelian bear dogs are handsome descendants of elk hounds with the body of a husky, right down to the curlicue tail. Adults weigh about 50 pounds. Most of them are dairy cow black-and-white with intense eyes that peer through a raccoon-like mask of black.

Saying Goodbye

Sugar Bear left Montana and this earth on October 14, 2004 as a result of a heartbreaking accident.  While locked in her kennel,  her collar entangled in the metal fencing as she was trying to dig under the fence.  In trying to free herself, she twisted her collar too tightly and choked herself.  We only had our puppy for a short while, but she had a huge impact on our lives.

We will miss Sugarbear for a long, long time.
